Reviews
Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow. I am incredibly humbled and overwhelmed with gratitude after visiting Burritt's Fresh Market during the peak season at Traverse City. I work as a personal chef and I was in town with my clientele for the weekend. My experience started when I called about a week in advance to ask about acquiring live lobster and some other hard-to-find grocery items. The woman who helped me was clear, concise, and was able to answer my questions before we hung up the phone. I received a call back, as promised, confirming my order of ten live lobsters for the weekend. We exchanged further information, and I was confident dinner was going to go smoothly. Before my arrival in Traverse City, their seafood department lead gave me a call to confirm my order, my arrival, and the day I wanted them. We were in touch, mainly playing phone tag for a day or two, but I think we were both appreciative. When I finally got to the store, I was pleasantly surprised by how clean and friendly it felt inside. They had everything I had spent the last 12 or so working hours looking for in various grocery stores and farmers markets, from cheeses and oils to vegetables and fish. I spent a decent hour or so filling my basket with some very fine foods when I left to finish prepping and confirmed I'd be back to get my lobster after they arrived in a few hours. Which I did, and bonus: my clients were staying across the literal street from Burritt's. After starting dinner, I had to make one last stop at the store. I was looking for oranges and I had my eye on these sets of lobster crackers and seafood forks. When it came time to checkout these last few items, my budget for the weekend was running thin and my card was (half-expectedly) declined. After a back and forth or two of trying to negotiate what was in my basket with what I was able to afford, the individual checking me out offered to cover my expenses through other means. This was not a couple of dollars either. I'm confident the person was going to loan me a few hundred bucks. At the time, between the way it was brought to the table, my adrenaline-fueled, food's-in-the-oven, still-one-more-stop-to-make frenzy, and the near 100°F it was outside, the weight of his generosity didn't really dawn on me until I was 2.4 miles back up the road. Once it did, I was so overwhelmed with gratitude I had such a viscerally physical response, I nearly had to pull over. I wanted to go back and thank them and offer to take them to dinner, just for being so generous and understanding, but by that point they were closed for the rest of the weekend. Oh. Dinner turned out great too. Thank you, Burritt's. I'll undoubtedly be back next year.
My son and I stay in Maple City every summer and know that we will be making several trips to Burritt's Market during our stay. We are able to find gluten free items, fresh seafood, and unique items that we can't find anywhere else. The people at Burritt's are wonderful at helping us keep items cold and explaining how to prepare them with what we have. Everyone is friendly, and I love the small market atmosphere. We look forward to seeing them again this summer!
They have a great wine department and their wine staff is very knowledgeable. We also go there to get special meat, turkey and fish orders for holiday dinners.
I wish we had this kind of market where I live. Great to get varied local goods to take home with us, would be even better to be able to cook the fresh fish and meats. They were nice to vacuum pack some smoked whitefish and trout to take home with us.
